Doug Michie brings a depth of experience and education to his role as your estate & financial planning, trusts & probate and real estate lawyer. Doug began his work life when he entered the military at age 17. After his honorable discharge from active duty he began college on the GI bill, graduating from U.C. Davis with a BS in biochemistry in June 1978. Doug was then accepted into the rigorous law program at Pepperdine University. There he received his JD, cum laude, in December 1980. He immediately began a legal career which included serving as an in house counsel for Travelers Insurance Company, and as a deputy district attorney for the County of Los Angeles. Ultimately he established the Michie Law Firm in March 1988.
Doug has been a licensed real estate broker since 1988 and has been previously certified by the Superior Court in San Bernardino as an expert in real estate. He owned and operated a real estate brokerage from 1988 to 2000, including a period of time as an owner of a Re/Max franchise. He also earned the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation [His CCIM certification is not currently active, because he has not paid the high annual dues to keep it active as he is not currently brokering commercial properties], making him a recognized expert in the disciplines of commercial and investment real estate1. He believes that real estate, either publicly owned through REIT investments or through privately owned real estate, is an integral part of a properly diversified investment portfolio.
Recognizing the need for more diverse knowledge, Doug began a full time master's degree program at Columbia University in New York in September 2000. He completed the program in May, 2001, earning his MS in real estate development. This was followed 16 months later at Texas A&M University where he earned his PhD in urban planning in August, 2002. Meanwhile, in July 2002, he moved to Switzerland to enter the highly rated MBA program at the elite business school, IMD in Lausanne, where he received his MBA in November 2003.2
In 2006, Doug also obtained his Certified Financial Planner™ Certification. Nationally-recognized financial advisor Suze Orman astutely reminds investors in her advice on choosing a financial advisor: "An adviser should be a Certified Financial Planner™, or CFP® professional, just as I am. That means that he or she cares enough about his or her clients to have gone through a two-year certification process, with continuing education requirements mandating that he or she stay up-to-date on the kinds of information that you need."3
Doug resides in the Oxnard Plain with his wife and children, where he is active in AYSO sports, serving in the past as a U10 referee and U10 coach during past seasons, and now as a U12 coach. He is on the site council of Pierpont Elementary School and is an active chamber member of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce. He is on the Board of Directors of the Capistrano Surfside Inn Timeshare Owners Association. He also served in the National Guard for over 20 years, ultimately becoming a Captain of Infantry in the Army National Guard.

1) "A Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) is a recognized expert in the disciplines of commercial and investment real estate. A CCIM is an invaluable resource to the commercial real estate owner, investor, and user, and is among an elite corps of more than 9,000 professionals who hold the CCIM designation across North America and more than 30 countries.... Only 6 percent of the estimated 150,000 commercial real estate practitioners nationwide hold the CCIM designation, which reflects not only the caliber of the program, but also why it is one of the most coveted and respected designations in the industry."
